AI: An Empowerment Tool We Should Embrace

Aug 10, 2022

“What a computer is to me is it’s the most remarkable tool that we’ve ever come up with.
It’s the equivalent of a bicycle for our minds.”
- Steve Jobs

Artificial Intelligence is quickly evolving, and we should start to recognize the potential impacts. Attempting to assess the consequences is far better than the alternative—ignoring its potential and being surprised by the impact.

For example, GPT-3 will impact writers and knowledge workers.

What is GPT-3? For the context of this post, it’s an AI that produces human-like text. Here’s an example of a question I asked along with GPT-3’s response.

Embrace and Empower

So, what is a writer to do with GPT-3? Embrace it. We don’t have another choice.

In the grand arc of history, technology is a force that does not stop. The genie is out of the bottle. So, the sooner we embrace it and understand it, the better we can prepare ourselves for the consequences.

As typical with breakthrough technologies, this is uncomfortable. Breakthrough technology changes the world. And humans hate change.

But, once we overcome the fear of change and embrace the technology, we can start to use it to empower ourselves.

Here’s a simple example—Grammarly. Grammarly is a popular tool for writers. It uses AI to “read” your writing and check for mistakes.

Grammarly has “read” more writing than I ever have (and ever will), so it can pattern match between the data its been trained on and the mistakes in my writing. I am using it to write this post, and it has caught a few errors I may have missed.

But, did Grammarly write this post?

No—just like other technologies, the technology enabled me to achieve the task faster and with higher quality.

Grammarly is just the beginning. GPT-3 has features that will blow you away.

Take a few minutes to read some of these prompts (what the human writes) and the sample response (what GPT-3 produces).

Better yet—play with the tool yourself.

Do more with less

Like all technologies before it, embracing AI will be uncomfortable and uneasy. We could spend a few additional blog posts exploring the downsides. These downsides are real, and we must understand them and prepare for them.

But, ultimately, AI will help humans do more with less. With AI’s help, writers will be able to produce more and be more creative. It will elevate us to work on more meaningful, impactful work.

AI is a bicycle. Hop on.
